It all started with the mention of the fact that we were looking for cottage industries to start here in Trancas, to be able to offer more jobs. One of our guests got excited when we mentioned the possibility of wine grapes, a winery. She had a friend who lived in Guanajuato, who had previously lived in Ensenada and knew most of the growers and winemakers from Valle Guadalupe and the other nearby wineries. She invited Tomas Castelazo to the hacienda during the week that she and her family were spending here.
And so it all began...
Several months later, we found ourselves deep in the cellars of some fabulous winemakers. Who knew that Mexico was making such wonderful wine? Honored to be there, we invited them to Dolores Hidalgo for a wine tasting to introduce the area to their glorious works of art. Hoping to convince them to sell their wines in our region, we were delighted that they accepted. The event sold out in two days, and we had a fabulous evening with more than 350 people present.
Now we have thrown our hats into the ring, and with help from our new friends in Ensenada we are planting vines on the hacienda. "Why?", some people ask... "Why not?", we ask ourselves...
Three years later, our first harvest is due for autumn 2010, so stay tuned.
